Missional Theology in Sending Rites of the Book of Common Worship

Jonathan Hehn

This paper seeks to examine and criticize the sending rites of the Service for the Lord's Day in the Book of Common Worship by seeing them through the lens of missional theology. Missional theology has become and increasingly and urgently important focus of several Protestant denominations recently. By tracing the early history of Western sending rites, their use in Calvin's Geneva, and their usage by current Presbyterian congregations, the author seeks to show how the sending rites in the Book of Common Worship might be subsequently altered to better reflect a sense of missional theology without compromising key historic norms.
